My Misspent Youth

Some days I have things to do. Those are days I'm away, or getting things ready to be away, but then there are days in between where I have absolutely. nothing. to. do. At all. I could sleep for the entire day if I wanted to.

Sure, you may be envious, but if you really were in this position I'm certain you'd be less enthused. Every now and again it's great to have nothing pressing my time. But the days of nothingness are just so... frequent, I guess would be the best word.

So since I have nothing of significance to say, here is a meme that I saw floating around a while back:

10 things I've done that you probably haven't:
(and if you have, lemme know)

  1. I've been wading in the Adriatic sea along the coast of Albania with an American and a Brit.
  2. Heck, I've been to Albania. Who does that these days?
  3. Read 10 Babysitter's Club books in one day.
  4. Mined coal in Springhill.
  5. Played "Auntie Em" in a school musical.
  6. Taken illegal photos of art in a gallery.
  7. Stolen a Christmas tree, on Christmas Eve (from the lot, not someone's house, I'm not that rebellious).
  8. Visited King Wenceslas's tomb.
  9. Owned a fish named Louise
  10. Been on the bad end of a rectal swab (there's a good end?) in the Czech Republic to test for salmonella. A test which would create an inexplicable bond between myself and the 16 other members of my team who suffered the same fate.

Geesh, that was harder than I thought (the list, not the swab). Hopefully the list will get more exciting in the near future...

And to add even more spice to our afternon here's my current/soon to be reading list, since the last one has long since been completed:

  1. Gone with the Wind - Margaret Mitchell (600 pages down, 400 to go! Woohoo!)
  2. Uncle Tom's Cabin - Harriet Beecher Stowe
  3. Fire and Ice - Michael Adams
  4. The Sun Also Rises - Ernest Hemingway
  5. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
  6. Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
  7. No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies - Naomi Klein

Go ahead, click on the links. You'll get way smarter, I promise.

Any recommendations? These all look pretty heavy, so anything that doesn't make me think too deeply, isn't John Grisham or that I can read in a day would be wonderful.

Hey,
I dunno if its really your thing, since ya like intellectual books, but I just finished the book "must love dogs" and it is really cute and really funny, you don't have to think a lot during it and i finished it in one day.... so... give it a try, you'll love it, then go see the movie when it comes out..

Hey Evelyn...

Glad to see that you're having a relaxing summer. I am leaving for Edmonton on August 30th, so we should get together sometime before then. I am in Halifax all summer too. Don't worry about a job, you have 40 more years to worry about finding one. :)

Just want to let you know that I can Identify with the BSC Book reading - I was a nerdy-readalot kid in grades 5-6. Also, I've taken illegal art pictures. One, to be exact (Michealangelo's Davide in Firenze, Italia). I haven't been to King Wenceslas' tomb, but to Wenceslas Square in Prague!!
As for your reading list - Brave New World is scary but amazing. I also would like to recommend "Sophie's World" by Jostein Gaarder, it's so fantastic! Also, "Le Petit Prince" by Antoine de St. Exupéry, it's wonderful and you can get it in almost any language, although it is best in french!
Enjoy!
